Practical Self Defense

The Threat

Our open society and liberal criminal justice system exposes us to threats every day. One can become the victim of a crime at any time and any place (even within the privacy of one’s own home). From the crazed junkie looking for quick cash to the serial rapist, the threat can take on many shapes and forms. Although steps can be taken to reduce the likelihood of being victimized, it is impossible to live a normal life without the potential of exposure to the criminal element. Though the market self defense equipment has grown dramatically over the past few years, one cannot expect to have any sort of traditional weapon (Pepper Spray, Taser, Firearm etc.) available when the incident occurs. Additionally the same liberal courts that are allowing repeat offenders to walk the streets will aggressively prosecute upstanding citizens who simply carry or employ such weapons, even in the name of self defense or self protection. The best method to survive and prevail in an attack is by preparing oneself by practicing defensive skills.

Practical Self Defense vs. Traditional Martial Arts

So what’s wrong with traditional Martial Arts for Self-Defense?

  • Traditional Martial arts stresses mechanical movements or “forms” to develop skills rather than focusing tactics required to protect oneself.
  • Traditional Martial arts take years to develop the skills necessary to effectively repel an attacker.
  • Traditional Martial Arts in most cases focuses on the skills necessary to compete against other skilled individuals in sanctioned competitions rather than real life situations
  • Martial Arts train the student to get into a “stance” for optimal balance and readiness. While this is not an issue for amateur competition, the stance itself coveys aggression and non-compliance to the attacker, immediately escalating the situation (i.e. the attacker is now expecting the victim to resist).
  • Traditional Martial Arts do not train the student to use common household items for self defense. Only the most advanced martial arts students train with weapons. The weapons used are stylized, traditional Martial Arts items, not something that a normal person would reasonably carry to work or the grocery store (Nunchucks, Sais, Bokken Swords etc.).

Why the Boxing Fitness Center Self Defense Approach

  • Bill Ayers of Boxing Fitness Center has developed a self defense system which is focused on the minimum skills necessary to disable and repel an attacker
  • The approach uses realistic targets to develop the muscle memory necessary to employ the skills under the duress of an actual attack. The goal is to have the training take over because skills have been tailored to realistic crime scenarios.
  • The use of common items that most people carry as makeshift weapons will be covered. The employment of such items can act as a “Force Multiplier”.
  • Boxing Fitness Center maintains a close relationship with local law enforcement.
